When the minds of two racing engine specialists with an overwhelming passion for motorsports came together in the 1960s, a unique company arose. This shared vision of German engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher brought AMG® to life.
What AMG® Stands For
What began as a two-man operation in Grossaspach rapidly developed into a global brand. The names behind these three letters were merely the starting point for greatness.

Origin Story
It all began with the tuning of the 300 SE racing engine in the Daimler-Benz Development Department. Despite all motorsports activities being discontinued, Aufrecht and Melcher pressed on in their spare time to hone engine performance. In 1967, they established the Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach engineering firm for the design and testing of racing engine development. A former mill in Burgstall became AMG® headquarters in the early years. Throughout the years, Mercedes-AMG® has become synonymous with factory-developed high-performance vehicles.
